Olive Tree Varieties
Sevillano Olive Trees
The Sevillano olive tree is a medium to large tree that can reach heights of 25 to 35 feet at maturity. It is most known for producing large black olives with low to moderate oil content, well-suited for canning. They yield more abundant fruit when planted near other Sevillano olive trees. They generally produce their large olive fruit in October.
The Sevillano is a beautiful evergreen tree with small dark green leaves. As it ages, it develops an open canopy and a unique, gnarled trunk. This olive tree is deer resistant, has dramatic foliage color, and is easy to care for, making it perfectly suitable in a Mediterranean style garden. The Sevillano thrives best when planted near another olive variety. During the first few growing seasons, it requires more water to establish an extensive root system. Once established, less water is needed.
Manzanillo Olive Trees
The Manzanillo olive tree is a medium size evergreen tree that can reach heights of 30 feet tall and 25 feet wide. This olive tree is also recognized for producing the most common variety of Spanish fruit olive. It yields smaller fruit, but is known to produce a higher oil content. The Manzanillo olive tree develops fruit during summer and can be harvested in the fall.
The Manzanillo is the most commonly planted commercial variety of olive tree with a lower, more spreading growth habit. Once established, it can tolerate hot and cold weather climates, as well as withstand drought conditions without sustaining any damage to the tree. This Spanish cultivar is appreciated for the recognizable shape of its fruit, the ease of removing the pit, and the excellent quality of the flesh.
Mission Olive Trees
The Mission olive tree is a medium to large size tree that can reach heights of 40 to 50 feet. This tree is famous for producing the Mission olive fruit. Mission olive trees can tolerate and survive in extreme temperatures of heat and cold, and versatile to many climate locations. It can produce table olives or olives used for olive oil. These table olives can be harvested from late October through November.
The Mission olive tree is prized for producing olives with one of the smallest pits. It also has the greatest cold resistance of any cultivar in California. The olive tree is grown in California, making it the ideal specimen for your California landscape. Due to the tree’s strong and vigorous nature, it doesn’t take much for this olive tree to thrive.
Fruitless Olive Trees
The Fruitless olive tree is a medium size tree that can reach heights up to 35 feet. The Fruitless olive tree has many of the same characteristics as the Manzanillo and Mission olive trees except for one thing – this olive tree does not bear fruit. This is an attractive feature as it does not produce the flowering fruit that releases pollen. The Fruitless olive tree is non-fruiting, non-pollinating, and remains structurally beautiful. The Fruitless Olive Tree is also known as the Swan Hill, Majestic Beauty, and Wilsonii.
Once established, the Fruitless olive tree requires very little water and can grow with a widespread, making this a great tree for use as a canopy tree for shade. It can be planted in a variety of landscapes due to its tolerance of poor, rocky, or shallow soil. Its unique multi-trunk structure and colorful foliage, make this olive tree the perfect focal point for any landscape design.
Sculpted Sevillano Olive Trees
The Sculpted Sevillano Olive Tree is a medium to large size tree that can reach heights up to 15-20 feet. The Sculpted Sevillano Olive Tree has many of the same characteristics as the regular Sevillano and Mission olive trees, however we have taken special care in growing, cultivating, and pruning these designer olive trees in our California nurseries to look more sculpted. Versus our other varieties we allow the branches to grow large canopies, with our sculpted olive trees they are pruned this was to give the olive tree a specific design and look.
Once established, the Sculpted Sevillano Olive Tree requires very little water and can grow even indoors. It can be planted in a variety of landscapes (including indoors) due to its tolerance of poor, rocky, or shallow soil. Its unique multi-trunk structure and colorful foliage, make this olive tree the perfect focal point for any interior or exterior landscape design. Our Sculpted Sevillano Olive Trees have been planted in a variety of indoor and outdoor landscape designs, including Restoration Hardware in Yountville, California located in the beautiful Napa Valley. the interior of high end hotel atrium lobbies.
Why Olive Trees
WEATHER TOLERANT
Mature olive trees are known for being weather tolerant and adapting to their environment. They are able to sustain extreme heat and cold weather. Olive trees prefer dry summers, but can become frost tolerant as they mature.
FRUIT BEARING
Olive trees provide an excellent source of edible fruit that can be pressed for oil or cured. Olive trees require minimal care and are known for being drought resistant once established. They can even yield fruit in drought conditions.
LONG LIFESPAN
Olive trees are a popular landscape design choice because of their evergreen leaves and long lifespan. Provided with the appropriate growing conditions, this tree can survive with minimal care for hundreds of years.
Olive Tree Care
Large olive trees can be uprooted and transplanted to a new living environment and maintain regrowth with proper maintenance. Once a large mature olive tree is transplanted and installed at a new location, it may develop a shock phase where the tree will need proper care to help sustain a new rooting system.
Depending on soilage and climate the tree will need proper watering with an effective draining system during the first year after installation. The olive tree will need mildly-fertile soil, all-day sun coverage, protection from harsh winds to protect the olive fruit, and deep watering about once a week. You may use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer once a month to encourage a healthy fruiting olive tree. You may prune the olive tree to help produce new flowering.
